<!-- TechnoloGIST: Editor's Notes -->

Richard Stallman, president of the Free Software Foundation
(FSF), was is here in India to promote the philosophy of
Free Software in India and setup the Indian chapter of FSF.
This is a very significant move for both technologists and
users, although you may ask what's so philosophical about
Free Software. It is software and it is free, right? Wrong.

Perhaps the main reason that the world at large hasn't been
able to appreciate this philosophy is due to the dual meaning
of the word "free". In Stallman's case, "free" refers to
freedom, not price. "Think of free speech, not free beer."

The philosophy and achievements of the FSF have been
suppressed by one other misconception: That 'Linux' is
an operating system. The truth here is that 'Linux' is
the kernel over which GNU components are built. Thus,
'GNU/Linux' should be the true name of the OS that is
used by over 20 million users today. However, the
popularity of 'Linux' has muffled the GNU factor, and
this has dealt a huge blow to the Free Software movement
itself. Name matters a lot in today's world, doesn't it?

This misconception also resulted in people mistaking
Richard Stallman to be father figure of the Open Source
movement. Nothing could be further away from the truth.
"We, the project that developed GNU, reject the term
'Open Source'. We disagree with the Open Source movement,
and we have never agreed with it. We are not part of it,
"Stallman insisted. But is anybody listening? Read the
report here:

Stallman was here in Mumbai recently to deliver his lecture
on The Free Software Movement and the GNU/Linux Operating
System. He spoke on various issues involving the use of
Free Software in general, the benefits that India in
particular had to derive from it, and :

Stallman couldn't have come with his message at a more
appropriate time. All eyes will soon be turned toward the
O'Reilly Open Source Convention in San Diego on July 26.

It may be recalled that Craig Mundie (senior VP, Microsoft),
while speaking at the New York University Stern School of
Business on May 3, 2001, made comments on the Open Source
movement that instantly sparked off a worldwide reaction.
Mundie will try to promote Microsoft's "shared source"
philosophy as a viable business model for software companies.

Michael Tiemann (CTO, Red Hat) threw the gauntlet down before
Mundie and challenged him to a public debate. Needless to say,
The Great Open Source Debate will be followed by millions of
technologists around the world. There may never be answers in
black and white, but there will surely be one camp that will
spend sleepless nights rethinking its software strategy.

ZDNet India presents The Great Open Source Debate special.
Track the events leading to the debate and its aftermath.
Read interviews of the people in the seat of action: Craig
Mundie, Michael Tiemann, Bill Gates, Linus Torvalds, Richard
Stallman, Bruce Perens (who defined the term "Open Source")
and many more.

FREE SOFTWARE FOUNDATION SOON IN INDIA
promised FSF president, Richard Stallman, who was
here in Mumbai recently to talk on a variety of
issues involving the use of free software in general
and the benefits that India in particular could
derive from it.

"CODE RED" WORM CLAIMS THOUSANDS OF SERVERS
by taking advantage of a security flaw in IIS. The
worm could help attackers identify infected computers
and gain control of them, allowing hackers to deface
site. Code Red seems to deface only English language
servers, going into hibernation on non-English versions
of Microsoft's IIS software.

JAVA WILL DIE AFTER SUN SUED MICROSOFT

Microsoft's decision to drop Java support with the
release of Windows XP this fall should teach Sun
Microsystems a lesson along the lines of that old
saw: Be careful what you wish for, you just may get
it. Microsoft seems to be using its monopoly power
to block a competitor--but only because the competitor
sued to make it so.
